The grave of Mai Makli is situated adjacent to the Jamia Mosque and in close proximity to the Shaikh Hamad Jamali Madressah within the Makli Necropolis. Recent conservation efforts have focused on the restoration and preservation of this significant site, including the installation of a new stone floor surrounding the grave and the updating of the grave’s stones. Mai Makli holds a prominent place in the local legends of Thatta and the Makli Necropolis. A well-known story recounts how her devout prayers are believed to have averted the conquest of Thatta by Sultan Feroz Shah Tughlaq of the Delhi Sultanate in AH Safar 769 (AD October 1367). This narrative underscores the high regard for pious individuals in the region’s history, attributing the city’s salvation to their spiritual intervention. The name “Makli” itself is often linked to Mai Makli, with one tradition suggesting that the necropolis was named in her honor, recognizing her piety and her spiritual connection to the area surrounding Thatta. This conservation work was executed by the Head Office, utilizing allocated funds from ancillary works associated with the Old Jamia Mosque project.
