Historical Background
Graveyard is commonly known as Jam Chutto graveyard and belongs to Kalhora period. Kalhoro family ruled over Sindh for eighty two years (1701-1783 A.D). Mian Nasir Muhammad Kalhoro was the first ruler, who after the samma rulers, established the independent rule in Sindh. Jam Chutto was prominent noble of Kalhoro period, during the reign of Mian Noor Muhammad Kalhoro and Mian Yar Muhammad Kalhoro. The graveyard is situated in Taluka Manjhand District Jamshoro and is located at the top of the hillock. At present two ruined canopies, one brick structure of tomb still survive in the graveyard and some old graves are present in the surroundings with in the graveyard. Both the canopies in this graveyard are collapsed and are currently restored by EFT.
Project Brief:
Canopy No-1: The canopy was completely collapsed and remains of the pillars and platform were piled and scattered in the graveyard. The origin canopy structure was erected over a square platform, its dimensions were 17′-6.0″ x 17′-6.0″ and its covered area 306.250 sq.ft (28.450 sq.m). The canopy was constructed with stone masonry by using lime and chiroli and erected with the support of twelve-pillars. The stones of the platforms are carved and decorated with geometrical designs. There are three graves laid on the platform, it measures 8′-0″ x 8′-0″, constructed with yellow stones, carved with beautiful designs.
Canopy No-2: This canopy structure belongs to Jam Chutto (name and date 1170 A.H. is mentioned on the pillar). It is totally damaged, the pillars and platforms and other parts of the canopy are concealed under the wreckage. The canopy was originally erected over a double square platforms, the dimensions of the first platform are 20′-9″ x 20′-9″. The canopy was square in plan, erected on the second platform, measuring 17′-3” x 17′-3”, with the support of twelve pillars. Its area is 297.56 sq.ft (27.64 sq. m). The border of the second platform is carved with multi-foil arches with rosette motifs. The canopy was constructed with stone masonry by using lime and chiroli. There are four graves laid on the rectangular platform, measuring 11’-3” x 7’-6”.
