Historical Background
The mud fort at Tando Allahyar also know as Mir Allahyar’s fortress was built in mid 18th century A.D., by Mir Allahyar son of Mir Fateh Ali Khan Talpur for residential purpose. The Mirs ruled in Sindh until 1843, where they had three different ruling states, Khairpur, Mirpurkhas and Hyderabad. They established “Tanda”(cantonments) surroundings each state and areas were assigned to any member of the ruling elite to govern and look after the affairs of those areas. Mir Allahyar khan, the son of Mir fateh ali khan established a fort around 1760s at Tando Allahyar. The fort originally had four bastions around the fort which were used as defensive mechanism around the fortress with entrance on the southern side. Out of the four bastions only one survives and there are traces of two other bastions, one inside the compound wall of the Mukhtiarkar office, which has dumped material lying on top of it, concealing it underneath. Traces of one bastion are found near the Mukhtiarkar office which is encroached by houses. The surviving bastions need to be preserved and restored to its original shape. The bastion outside the wall of Mukhtiarkar office, which is surviving in a standing position, is constructed with mud, the height of the bastion is 13′-0.4” and the dia is 22′-07”.
Project Brief:
The surviving bastion was in a very vulnerable condition, and needed to be preserved on priority basis. Mud from the base of the bastion had eroded and upper part of the bastion is also eroded due to efflorescence, harsh environmental conditions.
